About 20 minutes east of Downtown Columbus, Blacklick Woods is just one of twenty parks that make up Central Ohio’s impressive Metro Parks system. Spread out over 643 acres of pristine Ohioan woodland, Blacklick Woods is a weekender’s dream, with lodging, hiking, nature centers, and some of the best outdoor activities Columbus has to offer. Oh, and there’s golf. Interwoven with the certified Audubon Sanctuary, one of the top Columbus golf courses is a celebration of the harmony possible between humans and wildlife.
If you’re going to make the hike out to Blacklick, be sure to pack your A-game. The 9-hole course is a bit more forgiving, but the 18-hole adventure is widely known as one of the most challenging of all Columbus golf courses. Designed by Jack Kidwell for its 1973 opening, the course is designed to let long-hitters really stretch out with drastic elevation changes and water hazards abound, complements of the nearby protected swampland.
Easily the best golf spot in Ohio, The Golf Club was also ranked as the 41st best place to play golf in all of the US. That’s no small feat considering the number of courses in this country. And for that reason, you might have quite a hard time getting in. A members-only course, guests lucky enough to receive an invitation should cherish it and should take the time to try this famed Columbus golf course.
Originally opened in 1967 and designed by Pete Dye—this 18-hole course measures 7,439 yards from the longest tee, has a slope rating of 142, and a 75.9 USGA rating. It also features five sets of tees for different skill levels, with greens and fairways of bentgrass. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a negative review, too. Some words used to describe it? “Impeccable”, “truly special”, and “an American masterpiece.”
It’s also conveniently located only ten minutes away from Nottingham Trace—one of Columbus’ active adult communities. Featuring architecturally-elevated exteriors with diverse styles, colors, and masonry accents, Nottingham Trace also offers lawn care and snow removal so you can spend more time enjoying the on-site community amenities that include a fitness center, pickleball, and bocce courts, outdoor gathering spaces, and walking paths connecting to the park system trails.
With a span of more than 200 acres of lush greenery and a diverse and competitive 18 holes, this Pete Dye-designed course was designed to challenge and entertain players of all skill levels. The bunkers have undergone recent renovations and three new holes were added by Serafin Golf Course Design and Hurdzan Golf. Another new addition is a Par 3 Ninth Hole featuring a tee to a green shot that goes completely over the water.
