The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index was developed by the Residential Energy Service Network (RESNET) and is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. The index is based on a score of 100 for a typical code-built new home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code).
Lower energy bills with lower HERS score
The lower the score, the more energy-efficient the home. Each 1-point decrease in the HERS score corresponds to a 1% reduction in consumption—so a home with a HERS score of 85 is 15% more energy efficient than the typical new home and 45% more efficient than a typical existing home.
