Lifelong Learning

Oregon boomer a lifelong learning success story

For many baby boomers, the prospect of going back to college seems like a farfetched idea, but one Oregon woman made it a reality. Cyndi Calvert, 62, recently graduated from St. Louis Christian College in style, leaving the school as her class's salutatorian, the East Oregonian reports.

Calvert had long placed an emphasis on lifelong learning. She met her husband in college but dropped out soon after to raise a family. However, throughout the 1990s she returned to the classroom here and there to take courses at her local community college and in 2009 she enrolled full-time at St. Louis Christian. Despite being more than twice the age of her fellow students and dorm residents, she fit right in.

"It was amazing getting to know her," Heather Gustafson, 23, told the newspaper. "She had life experience that none of us had. She's an amazing person."

For Calvert, finally earning her degree was part of a decades-long effort, but some older adults return to the classroom purely because they enjoy learning. Homeowners at Sun City Mesquite have a great opportunity to head back to class thanks to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNLV, which offers classes to students of all levels.
