Exercising together yields best results
As anybody who struggles to find the motivation to exercise can attest, heading to the gym by yourself can sometimes be a chore. Results of a new study show just how important finding someone to exercise with can be. Researchers from The Miriam Hospital's Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University found people who exercised in a team setting lost more weight than those who did not.
For the study, researchers analyzed the results of a 2009 campaign in Rhode Island that challenged its participants to join a team and compete against other to see who could lose the most weight. They found that people who reported having higher levels of team participation also enjoyed better weight-loss results. Regardless of whether you're in a competition setting or simply a group of people who want to exercise, being together is what matters.
"Being surrounded by others with similar health goals all working to achieve the same thing may have really helped people with their weight loss efforts," lead author Tricia Leahey said.
