Baby boomers relieve stress through yoga, tai chi

Whether it be due to financial worries, pressure at the workplace or everyday obstacles, stress is something that may not abate with age. Most people have their own unique ways to deal with anxiety and stress, but a large number of baby boomers are turning to yoga and tai chi as a way to do so, The Newnan Times-Herald reports.

Residents of Newman, Georgia, have an opportunity to reap the relaxing benefits of the practice thanks to Yvette Monet, who teaches tai chi at a local YMCA. While there are a litany of poses that students are asked to strike, perfect form isn't crucial, according to Monet.

"It isn't important to be perfect in the poses," she told the news source. "The importance is to just feel the energy and to be present in the poses. This type of tai chi is even used in hospitals in China," she told the newspaper.

The popularity of yoga and tai-chi among older adults is not just limited to Georgia, of course. In fact, Pinellas Park, Florida, is home to the recently-crowned oldest yoga instructor in the world, 91-year-old Bernice Bates.

Bates teaches one class a week, with most of the students being in their 60s and 70s, Today.com reports. She's been teaching the exercise for more than 50 years and has no qualms with touting its benefits.

"Yoga gives you flexibility like you’ve never had before, and it makes you healthy because you’re working on the whole body, inside and out," she told the website.

Regardless of what activity you choose, exercising is an important part of aging. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most older adults need about two hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. The CDC also advises including two days of muscle-strengthening activities.

Homeowners at Sun City Peachtree who are looking to start practicing yoga are in luck. Of the many clubs and classes offered by the retirement community is a gentle yoga class that meets every Monday. There are also many other fitness options available including an indoor track and aerobics classes. This is all in addition to the state-of-the-art fitness center that provides residents with all they need to stay fit.
