Recent Question

We are considering moving to SCHH within a year. I really like to play table tennis. How active is the table tennis club? What is the level of play. Are the tables always open? How are the better members rated (USATT rating)?

This answer is from the president of the table tennis club. There are 125 members of the table tennis club at all skill levels. The majority of the club falls in to the intermediate category and meet between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. We have 3 tables and to accommodate everyone we play doubles. There is a group of advanced players that meet 3 times a week in the morning. We have beginners lessons also. The room is open from 8AM to 10PM every day so there is lots of opportunity to play. You don't have to be a member to use the room. As to ratings, some of the advanced may have a rating but I am not aware of it. We don't have a lot of tournaments and some people call us more of a social club then a sports club. We have a monthly social get together we call "Chips & Dips" and usually two parties a year. Our summer picnic will be in two weeks and we also have a fall party. Oh and let your friends know we do have a training robot available to member to work on their skills. Thanks again for your interest!

More Questions about Sun City Hilton Head

I'm in the process of comparing several of the Del Webb communities in SC and FL, hopefully choosing one and moving within the year. Does SCHH allow owners to have their own built-in pools? If so, are there specific requirements regarding size?
Built in pools are permitted and property boundaries and layout impact the size constraints. Your sales agent would be able to help you with this information.
Are their fees to take a fitness class, attend a theater production or join clubs? If so, please provide a listing of prices.
There are fees for most of the classes and they are generally $4.50; however, there are also activity passes can that can be purchased that can reduce the cost per class. These are wonderful for people who plan to regularly attend various programs. There is a cost to attend a theatre production – it generally ranges between $18 and $23. In addition to theatre productions we have many different types of entertainment as well as notable performances and those will have varying costs. The clubs have a $5 – 10 annual membership fee (with a few exceptions) which helps defray the varying costs they have during the year. The costs are always kept at a low to moderate level to enable the majority to attend. One of the goals of the community is to not have everyone pay for things they may not use. This keeps our Homeowners fees at a low cost and everyone happy.
How large are the properties, and can you fence in your yard if you have dogs?
The lots vary in size depending on the category of home you are building – Jasmine, Palmetto or Magnolia. Within each of those groupings there is some variance, your sales agent would be the best person to give you those details. You can not have a fence here but electric fences are allowed for dogs. We do have a very large and very nice dog park in SCHH.
We live in The Villages in Florida and are used to being able to get to virftually everything via golf car. I realize we would be more limited in being able to do this at your community--but what COULD we actually get to by golf car?
Outside our gates, within golf cart distance, you will find many Doctors, dentists, hair and nail salons, restaurants, a grocery store, outpatient surgical center, physical therapy, blood and x-ray labs and banks. In South Carolina, you may drive on roads 35 mph and less up to 4 miles outside of the gates. We have weekly movies in the community and we have two restaurants and 3 golf courses. Most of us are quite comfortable with one car and a golf cart (electric).
I have an RV is there a place within the community to store my RV?
Yes, we have an RV and boat storage area that is very reasonable. There are also a limited number of hookups for visitors to use if desired and there is a dump station and wonderful vehicle washing area.
My husband and I are considering Sun City - I am a retired HS music teacher who has started several community theaters as well as being involved in community and professional summer stock theater. I am also a stained glass artisan. I understand there is a community theater there as well as a stained glass studio. Can you tell me a little about these?
You are going to be very pleased with what we have here in Sun City Hilton Head regarding theatre and stained glass. Our Magnolia Hall is a 548 seat performing arts center with state of the art audio/video system plus practice rooms. The Stained Glass studio is located in our Yemassee Craft Building and offers classes and work space for our stained glass artist.
How is the property value holding up over time?
I have nothing to do with real estate am just a resident here in SCHH but I do like to read the real estate newsletters and ads in the paper and it seems as if things are going great here. This is our second new home here and we sold the first one after 5 years for what we paid for it as we wanted one of the new models.
where is the health care and how do you get there? is this a golf cart community?
Health care is within golf cart distance. There are many doctors and dentists right outside the gate. There is also an outpatient surgical center which includes a lab, x-ray and physical therapy facility. We have good medical care in the area and the closest hospital is approx. 5 mins from the gate and specializes in stroke incidents.
I've heard that Sun City is pet friendly. I have a large German Shepherd and he is a very nice boy. I am concerned that some may think German Shepherds are mean dogs, and since I am considering moving to Sun City this is a concern for me. My doggie is a part of our family, should I hve concerns about living there with him?
I have seen many large dogs in the community. Size isn’t the problem – it is behavior. If yours is a nice dog that doesn’t bite people or attack other dogs you should have absolutely no problem. We have had dogs in our family for years so I understand your concern.
Do you have places there to rent for a month to 3 month stay. I am single, I would want to make sure I would enjoy living there before buying.
There are places to rent here in SCHH. The minimum rental is for a 3 month period. You would have to see a rental agent as Del Webb sales associates only do new sales. To find out more about the 3 night stay in Explore Del Webb program contact either a sales associate or the EDW coordinator at 877-785-8319.
Interested in the 'new' section (Jasper Co) of Sun City. How does the lawn maintenance (included in the HOA) compare to the old side where owners pay for it or do it themselves? Does anybody have the statistics of how much higher the taxes are? Not in a flood zone, do folks still take flood insurance? What are the major differences between the old and the new developments?
We here in Jasper section pay $55 a month for all of our lawn services which is a bargain and they do a great job. To get the same on the Beaufort side would be much more.Taxes are higher but other services are lower, like homeowners insurance. Plus with a new home we have new warranties, new roofs, new heating and air conditioners. And we got to pick our own granite, floors, cabinets, etc. and not settle for what another person picked in a resale. And the energy package that is in the new homes saves lots of money each month on utilities. It is estimated in my model around $950 a year savings with it. You don't have to get flood insurance but if you choose to it is very reasonable...about $300 a year. Living in a new neighborhood makes it much easier to meet your neighbors as everyone is new and friendly instead of already having their groups in an older neighborhood.
Good Morning! My husband and I have visited Sun City Hilton Head several times but before making a decision to move to Sun City we are concerned with the traffic outside the Sun City gates. It seems especially heavy on weekends. What can you tell me about driving on the roads around Sun City and the shopping areas?
Traffic on 278 outside the gates especially on weekend can be very heavy. But we locals know to use the Bluffton Parkway which parallels 278 all the way to the bridge to Hilton Head. You can even get to the Tanger Outlets and most places along 278 via the Parkway. The are widening 278 right now
how are the summers
Summer's are very hot but being a Floridian for 45 years before here it is not hot for as long a period of time as there. July and August are the hottest months.
Besides the HOA fee, how much are the taxes???
I have a large home over 2700 sq. ft and my taxes are around $2700 per year.
My husband & I are considering a move this year to Bluffton, SC from Ft. Collins, Colorado. We have a visit planned for early March to see the 2 Del Webb communities. How far (miles/time)is it to the public beaches on Hilton Head Island? This is one of the major draws for us to move to South Carolina -- a 55+ community + the Beach...
Welcome! You are going to love Sun City. The public beaches are on Hilton Head Island and there are a number of them. Hilton Head Island is approximately 17 miles from Sun City. The closest of the beaches is probably about 25 minutes away. The rest are minutes apart. There are beautiful salt marshes and a tidal river contiguous to the Sun City property so it is possible to frequently watch dolphin and net shrimp from the pier.
Good morning. Our names are Dan and Dar. We are very interested in purchasing a home within Del Web Hilton Head. Can you please tell me about the crime? is there any problems with crime. Also when you purchase a home is this deeded property and do we own the property we purchase? Last question "What is it like living at Del Web and how is the qualtiy of life for a couple 60 years of age. SIncerely Dan Sparks
Being a gated community with 24 hour security on the roads we have very little crime. Bluffton outside the gate is a small community of about 35 thousand, again nothing to worry about as far as safety. Your home is owned by you through a deed. And you have to come down here. It is just a fantastic lifestyle. We have over 100 clubs, 6 pools; 2 of which are indoor, 3 state of the art fitness centers with about any kind of class you would want offered. Three golf courses, 14 tennis courts, 8 pickleball courts, a beautiful theatre that seats 550 people plus lots of craft and activity rooms. It is like living in a resort or a summer camp for adults. It is a place full of happy, active adults. Hope this answers your questions. Rosemary
Has anyone moved from the north (we're in Michigan) and been worried about potential hurricanes? We deal with all kinds of weather up here (snow, wind, rain and tornadoes) but nothing as destructive as hurricanes. Should we make this a major deciding factor in moving from Michigan to So. Carolina?
Being a transplanted Floridian, I wouldn't over worry on it. You have plenty of time to prepare and since I have lived here 7 years we have had no close calls. If you check the map and records the way we are situated most storms stay out to sea near us and land in NC as they stick out from the coast where we are indented. Tornadoes to me are much more dangerous. Hope this answers your questions. Rosemary
WHAT IF YOU ARE A WOMAN ALONE. ARE THERE MANY SINGLE WOMEN?
I have many friends in the community who are single and they are very involved in both neighborhood and community activities and travel. I have only heard excitement and joy when discussing their feelings about living here.
What are the green fees? Can you use your own golf cart?
Golf fees packages vary depending on the amount of golf you play (the more you play the cheaper it is per game) or, you may pay as you play. Yes, you may use your own golf cart – not gas powered – electric only.
Are dogs (Golden Retrievers) permitted? Also, what are the golf member fees?
Yes, golden retrievers are permitted and all owners are to comply with the covenants regarding cleaning up after your pet and keeping them leashed when walking them. Mean dogs should not be permitted. There are a number of golf packages which makes your question a little difficult to answer briefly. Basically, you can either pay as you golf or, you may buy a package that will be tailored to the number of times you anticipate golfing and you will get reduced rates accordingly. Fee information is available at the sales office or at the golf clubhouses.
Is there a fishing club at SCHH.
Yes – it’s called the Fishing and Hunting Club and it meets monthly. I know there were two fishing Tournaments in the Fall and various other activities are sponsored by the organization.
My wife and I are coming to Sun City Hilton Head Thursday March 7-Saturday Mar 9 for a 3 night vacation getaway. Are there any special events going on that weekend?
The newest Sunsations hasn’t come out yet – that would outline any special events for that time period. Having an Ambassador assigned would be the best option for finding out info and making plans.
What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a fun game played on a court similar to a badminton sized court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and a composite paddle about the size of a handball paddle. It is really fun and easy to learn to play. We usually play with two people on each side of the court. Most of our neighborhoods have pickleball groups and the Sun City Pickleball Club also has groups and leagues if you want to play more competitively. It is very fast paced and very social.
What are your average utility bills per month or total for the year?
I live in a WillowBend Loft 2700+ sq. feet, two floors. I averaged my bills for the past 20 months and here are the results, per month. Electric average was $111.45 (we air condition with electric); Gas $33.50 (we heat with gas); water $77.50 ( we water a lot in the summer). Hope this answers your question.
What's house insurance running for a single family home?
I just paid my bill for one year. I have a Willowbend Loft and my bill for one year was $668.50. Hope this helps answer your question.
How bad is the bug situation there? I have read that there are large cockroaches to contend with at Sun City Hilton due to location. Please be honest with me. Thank you, Karen
Yes, we have bugs but the most annoying to me are the “no see ums” (basically gnats) that we have twice a year- generally in October and March. Repellent usually is successful in keeping them away when you are out of doors during those times. We have very tightly woven screening on our enclosed porches. The large cockroaches you refer to are actually called the Florida woods cockroach (we tend to call them Palmetto bugs). We have found that these are not troublesome indoors – or outdoors, actually. One of the conditions of living bug free in the south (this is our third southern location) is having an exterminator who comes 4 times a year to treat the outside perimeter of your home and the indoor area. If you do that you should not have an issue with any of the native creatures. Don’t avoid living in Paradise because of our indigenous critters.
I would like to know if anyone or if you know of anyone who has had trouble with their home after it was built? We are thinking of building at sun city but when we check the builder out on the net we were shocked. and heart broken because we really liked sun city and it would be a perfect fit for us. any info on this matter could help us decide. Thanks
This is my second home here in Sun City Hilton Head and I have had no problems. At our 12 month warranty inspection they fixed every small thing I asked them to and there were not many...mostly cosmetic.
I am moving to Sun City, Hlton Head next week. One of the main reasons we are moving to Sun City is the active lifestyle. Can you recommend a weight loss group in the community.
Welcome to our little slice of paradise. Our fitness staff is starting a program called Weigh To Go. It is in conjunction with Hilton Head Hospital. You can contact the fitness center when you get here. It actually starts in Jan. so you have time. We also have a program called ITC that you can work with a trainer and get really good results. There are many other classes including water walking. Weight Watchers meets right outside our gate, you can get there in your golf cart. It is Tues. AM and PM. Best of luck in your move and weight loss program!
How do you like living there?
I can honestly say I love living here in Sun City Hilton Head. It is a beautiful community with such wonderful residents and first class amenities.
What do you do to get involved in this community?
Join clubs, play tennis, golf, volunteer ...it is very easy as everyone is very friendly.
Are there fitness classes available? Are they for all levels?
We have almost any fitness class you would be interested in. Most all can do but some are designated beginners, intermediate or even advanced.
What do you like best about living there?
The best thing about Sun City Hilton Head is the people...warm, friendly and caring plus fun.
Is it easy to join in with groups and clubs?
Absolutely....I go to many clubs and groups alone and everyone is so friendly and inviting. All residents are eligible to join any club.
What do you do in your neighborhood to get together?
Where to begin....we have a neighborhood pickleball group, bowling, bridge, canasta, bunko, bocce, dine in, dine out, wine tasters, book club, mah jongg, poker, plus more. We have a neighborhood monthly social also.
If you did it over, would you move there again?
I have lived here over 6 years and would definitely move here again. I have never had so many friends and done so many fun things.
How's the golf course?
We have three...two full size and one executive. All are in great playing shape...our courses are as nice or nicer than any in the area.
Are there evening activities for people who work?
Many of our resident clubs meet in the evening. We have evening movies and theatre productions plus our fitness center is open until 8 pm. There are scheduled evening fitness classes also.
What do you do for fun outside of the community?
Go to Hilton Head Island to the beach, go to historic Savannah, kayak the surrounding waters, bike on the many nearby bike trails, go to the theatre in Bluffton, Savannah or Hilton Head, polo matches, play interclub tennis with surrounding communities.
How are the community events? Is there plenty to do?
More than plenty....there is something going on all day every day and most evenings. It is hard to pick which activity to do. Whatever your interest is there is a group doing it and in case there isn't you can start one.
Which floorplan did you buy and why?
I have a Willowbend Loft. I love having a large kitchen with an island plus the loft is wonderful for my grandkids and for my husband to retreat to when I am entertaining my lady friends.
What made you decide to live there?
After looking all over the Southeast and Northwest we decided on Sun City Hilton Head mainly because of the beauty of the Lowcountry and closeness to the ocean. The moderate weather also enables us to golf and play tennis year round.
