Meet your Lifestyle Director - Julie Karl
I am thrilled to work in such a wonderful community with fun, active residents. This is truly a community that knows its neighbors. It is a pleasure to come to work everyday where I can offer programs to keep people active, healthy and social. My job is made easier by the great New Mexico climate and cultural offerings.
I have over 10 years experience planning and organizing events for all ages. My passion is lifelong wellness which is why I enjoy my role at Alegria. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics and a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Texas Tech University. Previously I worked in college recreation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Southeast Missouri State University and Texas Tech University.
I work closely with the Social Committee for input and advice on program offerings. My goal is to create a positive community that caters to our residents. I constantly encourage suggestions for new activities and events. Since we are still growing, I am adding new events every month.
I know all (really I do!) residents by name. I enjoy introducing residents to each other with common interests. I would love to talk to you about your interests and how to get involved in the Alegria Lifestyle!

About the Area
Bernalillo is at the northwest slope of the Sandia Mountains and hugs the banks of New Mexico's major river, the Rio Grande. Residing in Sandoval County, one of the nation's most geographically and culturally diverse areas, the languages and traditions are as varied as the music and dance of our collective cultures including all or portions of nine Indian pueblos, three Navajo Chapters and part of the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. The town of Bernalillo is a retail trade and service center for this part of the Rio Grande basin. Bernalillo has grown from a small but active community on the outskirts of Albuquerque to a bustling town that has never lost our friendly small town charm and our sense of family and community.

Culture / Entertainment
Since the 1620's when the wine grape was introduced here, vineyards have flourished in Bernalillo, leading to wine making becoming a major industry. Bernalillo celebrates the industry and local heritage each Labor Day with the premier wine festival in the state, The New Mexico Wine Festival at Bernalillo, nearing its 20th anniversary.
One of the town's oldest celebrations traditionally, dating over 310 years, Las Fiestas de San Lorenzo is held annually on August 9, 10, and 11th. Several generations of dance performers of Los Matachines participate side by side each year as they progress through the town in a spectacular event which dates to the 1600s.
Shopping
Once part of the famous "Route 66", Bernalillo's Main Street is home to all kinds of specialty restaurants and shops. One noteworthy place that has been here since the early 1930's is Silva's, the oldest continuous saloon in the country.
Schools
Within walking distance of the Downtown Bernalillo Rail Runner station downtown is the Sisters of Loretto Convent and High School.
Transportation
Downtown Bernalillo Rail Runner station is located in the center of historic Bernalillo. This central location allows residents to easily travel from their homes and for travelers to get off the train and experience the inviting culture of Bernalillo. The parking lot offers free parking and is located just south of Calle Duranes, on the west side of Railroad Track Road.
Bernalillo is only 13 miles north of Albuquerque and 45 miles south of Sante Fe, making a trip to one of the big cities easy and fast!
Clif and Kim Johnson
Clif and Kim Johnson had never been to New Mexico before they began searching for a single story home in a retirement community. Originally from Seattle, WA, they were looking for a drier climate and a lower cost of living. They found exactly that and more when they found Alegria. While looking at the models, they met their soon to be neighbor and made an instant connection. Clif is a potter and the cultural and history of New Mexico suit his hobby/2nd profession well. Clif and Kim love the peace and quiet they experience everyday living in Alegria as well as enjoy the universal design of their home.
