A Beginner’s Guide to Pickleball

If you’re ready to make a splash in the world of fitness, try hitting the pickleball court. Pickleball is officially America’s fastest-growing sport, so here’s your complete guide to the sport. Whether you’ve been playing for years or the game is brand new to you, this guide can help you get up to speed and step onto those courts with confidence!

The History of Pickleball

Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads looking to entertain their kids. They gave them ping-pong paddles and sent them out to a badminton net, only for the children to have so much fun that they continued refining it by lowering the net, using Wiffle-type balls, larger paddles, and creating their own rules. The history of pickleball is definitely one of creativity and innovation.

Where Did the Name Pickleball Come From?

The origin of the name “pickleball” is murky but according to Pickleball Magazine, it was likely named after “the pickle boat,” the slowest moving boat in a rowing race, due to the slower pace of the game. Rumor also has it that the name “pickleball” was all thanks to a dog named Pickle. It seems that this furry friend loved running onto courts and stealing balls during games. The Pritchard family, creators of the game, supposedly found it so amusing, they decided their game should bear the dog’s name. However, the claims that they named the game a few years before Pickle the dog came on the scene are reinforced with historical digging done by Pickleball Magazine.

Growth of Pickleball

Pickleball has grown in popularity across the United States because it’s an accessible, fun sport that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you’re a beginner or a player with physical limitations. It offers everyone the chance for healthy competition and friendly banter with other players on a more intimate court size. The smaller court size also means that pickleball can facilitate energetic matches for older players, especially those who used to play tennis. The sport is a great way to stay active while putting less stress on troublesome knees, shoulders, or hips.

Getting Started Playing Pickleball

What You Need to Play Pickleball

All you need for an exciting game of pickleball is a paddle, the ball, and some loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. Don't forget sneakers or your favorite pair of comfortable shoes. The game can be played on indoor or outdoor courts, which means you can play any time of year.

How to Reserve a Pickleball Court

Every facility or gym has its own rules and guidelines for reserving courts. When you find your preferred location, ask about the process for reserving pickleball courts. In certain places, it's as easy as putting your sunglasses in a bucket to guarantee a court, while other places might require signing up on an official sheet. Check with your specific court about their system for securing games.

Pickleball Etiquette

Pickleball is the perfect way to get your competitive fix while still having fun. Respect is the name of the game. Before you start playing, take some time to brush up or learn the etiquette and rules. Remember that each player acts as their own referee, so it’s important to be honest with yourself and respectful of others' calls. Whether you're playing singles or doubles, remember to be polite and greet everyone at the start. Sprinkle in compliments to players on their moves every once in a while. End with a "Good game!" for a friendly and enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Make Your Pickleball Games More Social

Pickleball is already a blast, but it gets even better when you have friends to share the experience with. Grab your pals and get ready for some fun competition.

  • Kick off your game with a potluck brunch or lunch. It's the perfect way to make new friends and fuel up for the game ahead.
  • Liven up game day by taking turns bringing snacks and drinks to share with everyone. It’s also a great opportunity to show everyone you care.
  • Get the entire family involved in a pickleball tournament. Invite your grandkids, kids, and anyone else who wants to join–a little healthy competition and friendly rivalries with people you love.
  • Find a nearby pickleball court while on vacation or during the holidays. Not only are you staying active, but you’re also meeting new players in different places.
  • Consider entering a pickleball tournament. It’s the chance to take your skills to the next level and see how far you can go–just for fun!

Pickleball continues to grow in popularity because this fun, two-player sport can positively impact your health through physical activity, while also adding another opportunity to socialize, strengthen connections with family and friends, and build new ones.
